Beyond Basics Toastmasters Newsletter

August 8, 2009

Saturday at Joe's Crab Shack found the Beyond Basics Toastmasters

Club members conducting another fun filled meeting.  The meeting was

opened by President Lupe Roy who called on David Borden for the

Invocation and Pledge.

We heard an appeal from Veronica Godley of San Antonio Water System

Toastmasters.  She needed trainers for her Officer Training sessions

she was holding at  5:30pm Wednesday August 26, 2009.  Several

volunteered.

Lupe told us again of our Contest on Saturday, 22 August at 09:30am

held in combination with San Antonio Discussion and Debate

Toastmasters at good old Joe's Crab Shack.  The club needs judges and

other officials, not to mention contestants.  The Chief Judge is

Harry Truman and Contest Chair is Susan McClure.  Lupe then

introduced the Toastmaster, Ren Liner.

Ren told us of the Dog Days of Summer, the theme of the meeting and

introduced the various meeting roles by having them described by the

various role players.  Phil Garcia was called upon for the Word of

the Day, "dignitary".  Ren then introduced the speakers.

Irene Gassko gave us a selection from the Competent Communication

Manual, Project 2, Organize Your Speech, "Worse Than a Terrorist".

We learned how motorists can provide even more trouble to us than

terrorist.

Harry Truman presented a speech from the Humorous Manual, Project 1,

Warm Up Your Audience, "Be Careful What You Ask For".  Harry, who is

afraid of heights, jumps out of a perfectly good airplane.  It was

indeed humorous.

Gloria Williams thrilled us from the Interpretative Reading Manual,

Project 5, The Oratorical Speech, "The Key to a Better Life".  It was

well read and inspiring.

David Fritzlen treat us to Table Topics with a Twist.  He would begin

the question, we were all paying close attention, and just when we

had it, he switched the question and respondent.  Stanley See still

does not believe it happened as he told us one of his rules that he

has broken lately and why.  Ajani Abdul_Khaliq told us that besides

cats and dogs, what was the best pet.  David Borden told us what

refreshes him, Coca Cola with real sugar from Mexico or cola lemonade

from Germany.  Deborah Borden told us about when she found herself

lagging a little behind.  Linda Stough was asked if she ever had the

urge to throw something at someone, but could not remember such a case.

General Evaluator Atheria Scott introduced evaluator Lupe Roy

evaluating Irene Gassko.  Phil Garcia evaluated Harry Truman's

speech and Linda Oliver evaluated Gloria Williams' speech.  Atheria

collected her team's reports and commented on the meeting,

admonishing us to acknowledge the Toastmaster, Fellow Toastmasters,

and Guests when speaking.

Lupe Roy received comments from the guests, Ajani Abdul_Khaliq and

Veronica Godley, who enjoyed the meeting and we hoped they will

return.  Lupe closed the meeting with a flourish of the gavel, again

reminding us to think "Contest August 22".
